Alois was appointed as Canopius UK Chief Underwriting Officer and Active Underwriter in 2022. He joined the business as Head of Underwriting and Strategy, as part of the merger with AmTrust in 2019. Alois was previously the Deputy Active Underwriter of Syndicate 1861.
He began his insurance career at Beazley as Pricing Actuary for their Cyber and Casualty Lines. Alois also leads the Follow Risk class, which is positioned alongside the business for partners to work with experts in non-core Canopius products. Alois is a qualified Actuary and holds a Master’s in Computer Science.
Ana joined Canopius USA in 2023 as the Business Manager based in the Chicago corporate office. She brings with her more than 15 years of experience in operations with more than a decade within the insurance industry having previously held positions at Brit Global Specialty and Ambridge Partners.
Ana is a graduate of Northeastern Illinois University and sits on the Board of Directors for Red Door Animal Shelter.
Barbara joined Canopius in 2013 as Group Head of HR. She has more than 30 years of HR management experience at major international financial services organisations. She is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.
Barbara was previously at the Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi UFJ Ltd where, as Head of HR for the EMEA region, she managed the strategy and delivery of HR for more than 1800 employees across 17 locations. She has also held senior HR positions at UBS and ABN AMRO, driving major cultural change.
Brandi joined Canopius in January 2020 as the first HR representative in the US and has spent her entire career working in all areas of Human Resources. She earned her undergraduate degree in Human Resources and currently holds PHR and SHRM-CP certifications.
Fern joined Canopius in 2019 as the Head of Finance, Risk & Compliance APAC & MENA where she is responsible for the Company’s financial, regulatory and compliance functions within the Asia Pacific Region. She began her career as an auditor with PwC LLP in Singapore, working on numerous insurance and reinsurance audits before spending nine years with Markel as the Regional Finance and Operations Manager.
Fern graduated with an honours degree in Bachelor of Accountancy from the Nanyang Technological University and is a qualified Chartered Accountant with the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants.
Gavin joined Canopius as Group CFO in January 2022 and holds executive responsibility for Finance, Actuarial, Investments and M&A. He has extensive experience in financial leadership and insurance. Starting as a graduate in Lloyd’s, he joined PWC in 1993 and spent almost three decades working with some of their largest global and domestic insurance clients, holding a number of senior roles, most recently as PWC’s Regional Financial Services Leader.
Prior to this, Gavin led the insurance and asset management assurance practice, before which he was Head of the Lloyd’s and London Market practice. He also served as CFO of Prudential plc’s UK life insurance business between 2017-2019, while on secondment from PWC.
Greg brings more than 30 years of insurance leadership experience, most recently with Elipslife (a subsidiary of Swiss Re) and Kemper. He joined Canopius at the end of 2021 as Chief Financial Officer.
He has an undergraduate degree in accountancy, a master’s in taxation, and is a CPA.
Ian serves as Independent Non-Executive Director on the CMA Board, the Canopius Group Limited (CGL) Board and is Chair of AllClear Group.
Ian formerly chaired Kingsbridge, A-Plan, 7im, Guardian Financial Services and Partnership Assurance. His previous Board roles include Seven Investment Management, Resolution Life Companies, Unum Ltd, Liverpool Victoria, Endsleigh and AA Insurance.
Prior to his non-executive appointments, Ian’s 25-year career comprised senior, executive roles at blue-chip firms across the insurance industry, including Zurich Financial Services, BAT Financial Services and Eagle Star.
Jennifer joined Canopius in 2019 and now heads up the UK Claims Team. She is a qualified solicitor and prior to joining Canopius, practiced at a leading (re)insurance law firm, as well as working in the specialty claims team at Markel.
Jennifer and her team pride themselves on their technical expertise and ability to proactively manage a broad range of complex claims to successful resolution. Jennifer strives for excellent customer service by working collaboratively with customers, to understand their needs and find commercial solutions to claims.
Lindsay joined Canopius in December 2021 from AXA XL, where she was, most recently, Head of Underwriting Management, UK & Lloyd’s, with responsibility for leading a team of business managers, and overseeing the management of underwriting governance and controls for its legal entities.
Lindsay held several other senior positions at the insurer including Chief of Staff, where she reported to Canopius’ Chief Executive Officer Neil Robertson when he was CEO of Global Specialty at AXA XL.
Prior to that Lindsay held various senior roles at XL Catlin and was the Head of Business Development and Crisis Management Global from 2015-2018.
Lorraine joined Canopius in March 2020 as Head of Human Resources, APAC & MENA, responsible for the full spectrum of HR functions across Singapore and Sydney offices. She began her insurance career with Allianz where she was responsible for talent management and training before moving to become Chief HR Officer with Tokio Marine Life Insurance and FWD Insurance Singapore.
In 2016, she joined FWD where she grew the human capital from a start-up business and was instrumental in the acquisition of Shenton Insurance by FWD Group.
Mark joined Canopius in August 2016 as Chief Executive APAC & MENA, with responsibility for the Singapore, Australia and Lloyd’s China operations. He began his insurance career broking with Sedgwick in London, before moving to J&H as Senior Vice President in 1991.
After the company was acquired by Marsh, he became leader of their international property team, followed by various roles he held at Guy Carpenter - first as Head of Faculty Japan and then as Head of Faculty for Guy Carpenter Asia Pacific, before being appointed Chief Operating Officer & Head of Guy Carpenter Fac Asia Pacific in 2007.
In 2008 Mark moved to the carrier side, being appointed as CEO of Catlin Asia Pacific, based in Singapore. Prior to joining Canopius, Mark served as Head of Asia & Deputy CEO Asia Pacific XL Catlin, having helped both organisations through the integration post-merger.
Mark currently also chairs the Asia Pacific & MENA Market Group (AMG), a market-elected position, representing all Lloyd’s Managing Agencies with a physical presence in APAC & MENA, and is a member of the Canopius Leadership Team.
Matthew Crane is the Head of Distribution at Canopius (a newly created role in 2024) and is a member of the UK ExCo.
Matthew brings nearly three decades of senior market experience to Canopius. He joined most recently from PIB Group where he was CEO of Q Underwriting and a member of the Group ExCo. He notably spent 24 years at QBE taking on several executive roles across the company such as Managing Director Commercial Motor, Managing Director UK and Ireland and Executive Director of Sales and Distribution. He also served as CEO of AMWINS Global Risks where he oversaw the London and Lloyd’s market, Europe, Asia and LatAm operations.
With qualifications as a barrister and in corporate finance, Miriam spent more than 30 years working for a number of leading investment banks and other financial institutions. In previous roles, she served as a Non-Executive Director of the UK energy regulator OFGEM and on the Board of a number of publicly quoted companies and was also a founding partner of SPARK Advisory Partners, an independent corporate advisory business.
Miriam is currently the Chair of SMS plc and Aquila Energy Efficiency Trust, Non-Executive Director of Gulf International Bank UK, Encyclis Holdco Limited and Eclipse Shipping Limited, and an Adviser to the Mayor of London’s Energy Efficiency Fund. A Deputy Lieutenant of the City of Edinburgh, Miriam was awarded an OBE for services to corporate finance in 2000.
Natt was appointed Deputy Chief Underwriting Officer for Canopius Asia Pacific in 2022. He joined the company in January 2019 as Head of Reinsurance Underwriting for Asia Pacific.
Natt began his career at Swiss Re in 2001 as a management trainee. Since then, he served the company across multiple management positions over 13 years, in Australia, China, and Singapore. He has experience in a variety of functional roles including underwriting, sales, client management, and general management. Most recently, he was Head of Property & Casualty China, Head of Property Underwriting Asia, and Head of Agricultural Reinsurance Asia Pacific.
Natt is a graduate of Swiss Re Group Management Development Programme. He holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a master’s in finance.
Nick joined Canopius in 2011 and has been Group Chief Actuary since 2018, leading Pricing, Reserving and Capital across the Group. Prior to joining Canopius he worked as an actuarial consultant for Lane Clarke & Peacock.
Nick has recently served as Chair of the Committee of Actuaries in the London Market and was voted General Insurance Actuary of the Year in 2018 by the Actuarial Post.
Paul Ceurvorst has served on the Board of Canopius Group Limited as an Independent Non-Executive Director since 2016 and brings more than four decades of experience to the role.
Prior to joining Canopius, Paul was Chief Executive Officer of Gen Re’s London market operations, Faraday Reinsurance Co. Limited and Faraday Managing Agents.
Paul serves as Chair of the Canopius Managing Agents (CMA) Board. He is an independent Director of investment companies, insurers and investment funds. Until 2012 he was Head of Portfolio Management at Canaccord Genuity and, prior to this, he served as Chief Executive Officer of Corazon Capital and Managing Director of Rothschild private banking. He has more than 35 years’ experience in financial markets in London, Dublin and Guernsey, holding senior positions in investment management and trading.
Paul is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investments, a past Commissioner of the Guernsey Financial Services Commission and past Chairman of the Guernsey International Business Association.
Peter brings a wealth of asset management and insurance sector expertise to Canopius. Following an extensive career at PwC, where he was latterly the firm’s Managing Partner in the UK, Peter held a suite of Non-Executive Directorships, including for Brit Insurance and AXA in the UK and Ireland. Peter also formerly served as Non-Executive Director to Smith & Williamson and UK Coal, Chairman of Argent Group and was a member of the Competition Commission and the Natural Environment Research Council.
In addition to Canopius, Peter is currently Non-Executive Director at Architas Group and Chairman of AMMEL, a fund management company. Peter holds an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Greenwich.
Ruchama joined Canopius as US Head of Actuarial in November 2022 to build a US-based actuarial function to support the actuarial needs of the business written out of the US and Bermuda.
Ruchama has more than 20 years of actuarial experience primarily supporting specialty and commercial lines business, most recently as AVP of Global Specialty Reserving at The Hartford and as Corporate Actuary at Navigators. Ruchama has also worked at Liberty International Underwriters in various capacities within actuarial.
Ruchama is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries.
Sam is the Group Chief Underwriting Officer for Canopius.
Sam started his distinctive 30-year insurance career at the Commercial Union in 1995, and moved to QBE Syndicate 1036 in 1998. By 2001, he had become Head of Offshore Energy for that syndicate, and then overall Head of Energy, four years later. In 2013, he was promoted to Managing Director International Markets and in 2017 to Managing Director for QBE European Operations, Insurance Division. In March 2021 he became Group Chief Underwriting Officer and a member of the QBE Executive Board.
Following his successful career at QBE, Sam moved to Canopius in October 2023 to lead and shape our diverse portfolio of business across three regional business units. Working as part of the Group Leadership Team and alongside senior underwriting leaders, Sam is spearheading Canopius’s ambitious underwriting plans, focusing on areas where Canopius has, or could have, distinction or a competitive advantage.
Serena joined Canopius in 2022 and has more than 15 years of experience in the insurance industry. Prior to going in-house, she was an insurance and corporate litigator at several national law firms.
Serena was previously Corporate Counsel at Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty as well as Brit Global Specialty USA.
Sheldon is the Group Chief Risk Officer for Canopius. After graduating with a Master’s in Physics Sheldon worked in Banking where he held several quantitative roles on a Trading Floor, before running the global funding and liquidity analytics for Lloyd’s Banking Group Treasury. In 2005 he transitioned into Insurance as Head of Financial Risk for listed insurer RSA responsible for Asset side Capital and Reinsurance Credit risk leading RSA through their Solvency II model validation.
In 2010 he moved into the Specialty P&C Market as Head of Risk for Talbot Underwriting, ultimately building the global ERM team for Bermuda based parent Validus and co-Chairing the LMA CRO Forum before becoming the Chief Risk Officer for ANV where he lead the Risk, Legal and Compliance function through the Lloyd’s Solvency II application.
He was more previously Managing Director for AmTrust at Lloyd’s and joined the Canopius Group in 2019 as part of the merger.
Thomas joined Canopius in June 2019 as Head of Actuarial - Asia Pacific & MENA. He is a qualified Actuary, with 15 years of experience in Asian and European (re)insurance markets. More than 10 years of this experience have been accrued in APAC, working at SCOR and Odyssey Reinsurance Company, overseeing pricing, CAT modelling and risk management activities.
Tim is a qualified Actuary with circa 20 years’ experience in non-life actuarial roles.
Following the merger with AmTrust, Tim joined Canopius in October 2019 as Head of Reserving and was promoted to Head of UK Actuarial in May 2022, following the company restructure to introduce regional entities. This role includes membership of UK Exco and transitioning towards Chief Actuary regulatory responsibilities for UK and CMA.
Tim has worked at various Lloyd’s managing agencies in similar roles since 2013 (moving via acquisition each time), and prior to this worked for Deloitte as an actuarial consultant.
Uwe Schoberth is the Chief Distribution Officer - US/Bermuda at Canopius and has over 30 years of experience in the insurance sector.
Prior to joining Canopius, Uwe served as Chief Distribution Officer at Joyn Insurance. He previously held leadership roles at Lloyd’s as well as other leading carriers, including Blackboard Insurance, QBE Group, XL Group, Winterthur International Insurance Company, and Gerling. During his career, he’s held a diverse set of roles in marketing and sales strategies, broker and client relations, underwriting and distribution.
Uwe also serves as Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors for the German American Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest and as Chairman of the Board for German American Events, LLC.
Will joined Canopius in May 2014 and has more than 20 years’ experience working in financial services.
He graduated from Exeter University with a degree in Mathematical Statistics with Operational Research. Will previously worked at Skandia (now part of Old Mutual) and Sterling Insurance Group (now part of Covéa Insurance) before moving to Mazars to help develop their Risk and Capital advisory consultancy practice.
As UK Chief Risk Officer, Will is responsible for the UK business unit’s enterprise risk management and compliance frameworks. He leads a team of risk and governance experts who work collaboratively with the business to help ensure risks are identified, understood, and managed effectively to support the delivery of our strategic objectives.
Yann joined Canopius in September 2018. As Chief Underwriting Officer, he has responsibility for Underwriting across the Asia Pacific region, with offices in Singapore, Australia and Lloyd’s China operations.
After a few years as an engineer in the oil industry, he began his insurance career as an Energy Underwriter. He relocated to Singapore in 2007 where he underwrote an Upstream and Downstream portfolio, before becoming Singapore Country Head for Catlin then XL Catlin. In that role, he oversaw three legal entities and sat on the regional leadership team.
He then set up Aspen on the Lloyd’s Asia platform as their country CEO prior to joining Canopius as Head of Insurance APAC & MENA.
